The Rolling Stones have signed a new deal with Universal Music. It's an exclusive, worldwide recording agreement that spells the end of the band's long relationship with EMI.
Universal will release any new Stones music on its Polydor label, but the best part of the deal is the rights to the group's back catalog from 1971's "Sticky Fingers" through the present. Universal will probably remaster and re-release all of those classic albums at some point over the next few months.
The Stones' "Shine A Light" soundtrack was released earlier this year by Universal in a one-off deal, but many experts predicted it would become long term.
This is a serious blow to EMI, which has now lost Paul McCartney, Radiohead and the Stones as artists. Live Nation was also reportedly in the running for the Stones as well.
